Atletico Madrid have won the 2018 Europa League 3-0 thanks to two goals from Antoine Griezmann and one from Gabi. They overcame Marseille in what can only be described as a comfortable win.
Marseille broke out the traps the better side, and put the Spaniards to the sword in the first 15 minutes, but after all the pressure Atletico went ahead in the 21st minute before doubling their lead just after half-time when Griezmann struck for the second time. Captain Gabi sealed the win late on. But, again, the plaudits have to go to the Spanish club’s defence.
Standing strong, Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez gave Marseille nothing to cheer about as it turned out to be almost impossible to break them down. Marseille only managed one shot on target, and with Konstantinos Mitroglou heading the inside of the post after 80 minutes only for it to bounce out, they knew it wasn’t to be their night.
58,000 fans packed themselves into the Groupama Stadium in Lyon to watch the highlight of both club’s seasons. And the Marseille fans were incredible throughout. The atmosphere they brought despite being two goals down was a spectable within itself, and I’m sure they will enjoy the short trip home.
But, Atletico fans will be happier as they travel back to the capital of Spain. But for them, all eyes will be on next season. Back in the Champions League they will want to prove themselves on the biggest stage of them all.
Worringly though for fans of the French national team, Dimitri Payet was substituted off after just 32 minutes through a potential hamstring injury. He walked unaided from the pitch, but was in tears as he must be fearing the worst ahead of this years World Cup.
